Social network analysis of personnel selection standards: An empirical study in academic institution

Title: Social network analysis of personnel selection standards: An empirical study in academic institution
Authors: Sun, Xiangkun (孫翔鵾)
Abstract: Personnel selection is the procedure of recruiting and promoting individuals. Academic recruitment is the process of recruiting an academic staff for an institution. For example, the Department of Information Systems at City University of Hong Kong has invited applications for positions at the rank of Assistant Professors or Associate Professors. Having received a peal of applications, the department finds it difficult to recruit appropriate ones. Applicant evaluation is usually based on the information from curriculum vita and interviews. Though easy ways of evaluating a candidate they are, these methods sometimes cannot provide sufficient information to compare one candidate against another. New method should be employed to supplement with the academic staff recruitment process.
This study seeks to find out how to evaluate a candidate based on the analysis of an applicant’s social network. Promoting is recruiting one or more staffs internally. So the conclusion made from this study can be applied not only to external recruitment process but also internal promotion process. Considering the fact that most of current researches study personnel selection from the perspectives of human resource management and psychology (Deniz & Viswesvaran, 1996) etc., this study contributes in applying social network analysis in a personnel selection context and diversifying the methods of recruiting or promoting appropriate persons.

Title: Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited
Authors: Li, Fei (李飛)
Abstract: Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (“HKEx”) is a listed company, regulating all the core stocks and derivative marketplace in Hong Kong. This project focused on HKEx’s strategic alternatives towards Shanghai Stock Exchange’s (“SSE”) rise in recent years. HKEx and SSE are the core parts in respective finance industries. Debates over the sibling rivalry between them have increased year after year. Therefore, the target of this project is to analyze the competitive landscape HKEx faced, describe the strategic alternatives HKEx may have, and provide solution that can address this situation and support HKEx’s further development.
The project is divided into 2 parts, case study and case analysis. The first part included A Case and B Case. A Case described the background of HKEx, SSE as well as China’s capital market. Then it introduced HKEx’s planning about accepting mainland accounting standards, make new listing rules to mineral and exploration companies, and developing RMB products. B Case presented the new competitive landscape and HKEx’s strategic plan 2010-2012, followed by HKEx’s preparations for RMB products. For the second part, first I described its external and internal environment with five-force model and SWOT analysis. Then strategic alternatives were introduced. I made recommendations to HKEx with judgments at last.

We will integrate all the KM tools together to propose a central system for the company. Finally, we will give some brief suggestion of implementation plan and expected outcomes.
CP department faces a lot of problems in socialization and it lacks lots of IT tools to help him to solve problems. After identifying five criteria, we Propose Non-IT KM tools like reward & punishment to help CP department to improve employee‘s motivation and IT-based KM tools like Expert system to improve working efficiency. The total investment of our proposal will be estimated at about 200 thousand, and we specify the different steps for different systems to be implemented. Although there are a lot of uncertainties in implantation process, we still believe the working efficiency and effectiveness will be greatly improved once the company adopts our proposal.
