Emotional intelligence and quality of romantic relationship

Abstract

Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and quality of heterosexual relationship (as indicated by satisfaction and intimacy level). In addition, the effect of personality was also examined.

Methods: All 103 participants were Chinese, were in university level, and were engaging in a heterosexual relationship of at least 6 months when the study began. Participants completed questionnaires that determine their score on the EI Scale (i.e., EIS), their relationship satisfaction and intimacy level, and their personality.

Results: A positive correlation was found between EI and quality of relationship, however this was only limited to relationships of less than 2 years. Individuals scoring high on the emotional appraisal subscale of the EIS were more likely to report more intimate and satisfying relationships, and this correlation was found to be independent of relationships’ duration. These associations remained statistically significant even when the effect of Big Five personality trait was controlled.

Discussion: The results provide a better understanding on the EI implications for intimate relationships. The quality of relationship may be improved substantially by enhancing emotional competencies.
