dc.description.abstract | Objectives: This study examined the mental health and self-esteem of unemployed Hong Kong Chinese in comparison with their employed counterparts. In addition, time structure and perceived social support of the unemployed were studied. Methods: A total of 115 participants of different age groups, including 52 unemployed and 63 employed, completed a questionnaire that measures their mental health, self-esteem, time structure, and perceived social support. Results: As predicted, the unemployed participants had poorer mental health but not significantly lower self-esteem than their employed counterparts. Results also indicated that among the unemployed, those with better time structure and more perceived social support enjoyed better mental health and higher level of self-esteem. Discussion: The role of better time structure and social support may be incorporated in intervention programs as useful coping resources for the unemployed individuals. | en |
