Abstract: The thesis focused on Zhang Dai's Prose in the Kuaiyuan Period. ‘Kuaiyuan Period’ refers to AD1649-1680; the period that the Ming Dynasty crumbled away under the pressure from northern tribes. ’Kuaiyuan’ is the mansion house of Zhang Dai and his family after the abolishment of the Ming Dynasty. Experienced the rack and ruin of the regime, Zhang’s artistic creation has developed rapidly and reached maturity. His famous literatures are finished mostly at Kuaiyuan Period, such as Dream of Tao'an, The West Lake in Reminiscence and Shi Gui Shu etc. He draws moving scenes of his life in the literature. These proses are sighing for homeland and friends, his worry and sorrow. Different visages of the society and citizen’s life of late Ming Dynasty are described in his proses. He threw the tape of life highlights up on the screen, composed attractive pictures of the late Ming Dynasty. This thesis analyzed Zhang Dai’s literatures through using the methodology of aesthetics, history, linguistic and composition studies. This thesis summed up the composition theory of Zhang Dai and analyzed the concrete content and connotational emotion within his literature. His artistic style was summarized through his manner of writing and structure of the articles. These analyses explain and describe his significance of the literary world of the late Ming and his influence to the next generation. Analysis on Zhang Dai’s prose and historical treatise shows that Zhang Dai selected his lifeway before the decline of the Ming dynasty and the human activities in the late Ming period as his subject matter aimed at expressing his reminiscence and languishing for homeland, old friends and acquaintances. The humanity, life of social man and landscape that described in Zhang’s literatures reflected his attention and affirmation of human life and the worth of subsistence. According to the research, Zhang Dai indite his proses by using the skills and features in fiction composing for instances get up plots and dialogues. These skills facilitate the creation of prose with high flexibility. His proses are short in length, yet coherent and highly textually knitted. Literary language of his literatures does not precisely conform the formalities, notwithstanding he has attained both aesthetic of elegant and vulgar, the words he uses seem novelty and shaped by hammer, depicts vivid description of the subjects. These characteristics form the multifarious literary styles of Zhang Dai including the imagination space with calm and peace; the sense of exquisite, immaterial and ethereal life; the contrast between degage and doleful. Thus, Zhang Dai became a special prose writer in the late Ming Dynasty.
