Abstract: Research on control and motion relationships has been ongoing for over a half decade. It was however noted that in almost all the recent movement compatibility studies, systematic analysis on strength and reversibility of stereotypes and contribution of component strengths to the overall population stereotype were not reported. A comprehensive and scientific study on movement compatibility on different control display configurations for verifying the common beliefs of stereotypes and establishing useful ergonomic design guidelines is thus necessary and it hence forms the basis of this intensive series of experiments reported in this thesis. The experiments included the testing of rotary control-circular display combination with the controls positioned in normal planes using both simulated and real hardware test (Experiment 1), rotary control-circular display combination with the controls positioned in peculiar planes (Experiment 2), rotary control-digital counter combination (Experiment 3), lever control-circular display combination using both simulated and hardware test (Experiment 4), and four-way lever control-digital counter combination (Experiment 5). In all the experiments, systematic and scientific analyses of movement compatibility in terms of strength and reversibility of stereotypes, response times, and contribution of component principles on various control-display configurations were successfully conducted for setting up a useful paradigm in studying population stereotypes. Moreover, the validity of the computer simulated test and paper-and-pencil tests were critically reviewed and analyzed. The results of this study provide useful and specific ergonomics design recommendations for person-machine interfaces that should help industrial designers to develop effective interfaces and hence to improve overall system design and performance.
