Abstract: The utilization of Global Positioning System technology and navigation systems on handheld device is becoming fashionable. However, most of these technologies are originally designed for personal usage only. As a matter of fact that people uses bus services everyday, it would be more helpful if the navigation system can extend its usage to the public transportation users. Installing a GPS System on buses can also automate the repeating bus stop announcement tasks for the driver. Reliable announcement services can help passengers to get off at the correct station. In addition, traffic congestion usually exists on some road segments on daily basis. A navigation system can help by notifying the passengers before they are getting trapped in the traffic congestion. The study of this project aims to discover a new solution for passengers to obtain advanced services along their journey, and to investigate the usage of GPS and navigation system in public transportation. A web-based system for passengers to locate their current position, obtain a shortest path to their desired location by map display, acquire automated bus stop announcement services and traffic congestion notification is going to be developed. After the research, a comprehensive understanding of GPS and GIS technology can be achieved. Method in detecting bus stop and traffic congestion will be examined. Design in graph building, path finding algorithm, as well as techniques in AJAX would be studied.
