Network traffic accounting is an essential part of daily operation of network. It is especially important for ISPs or corporate networks. There are many off the shelf product available for network traffic accounting. But none of them are able to solve the key issues. One of the key points is that network traffic is huge and complex, and it is generated continuously. These properties match the model of stream computation. In this project, we will investigate the key issues of network traffic accounting and current status of development of technology for network traffic accounting. State of the art techniques of stream computing are then investigated. After investigation, we found that there is no algorithm than can provide estimates with low relative error at a reasonable cost. Then we will present our solution to network traffic accounting, which is able to provide accurate answer with reasonable resource requirement. The core algorithm called, Searchable Universal Source Encoding, had been submitted as a paper.
