Abstract: ScanRead is a book reading system, which is specially designed for the visually impaired persons to read English text based documents or books. The system is deliberated to be accessed via speech and other conventional device as well. Users may use his/her voice solely to command, control and operate ScanRead system. In the system, a microphone is used as an input device. Speech commands are recognized by the Speech Recognition (SR) system. A scanner is used to scan the text of documents or books. An Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system is used to recognize the scanned page. The Text-to-Speech (TTS) system is used to output the page contents as speech via a headphone or loudspeaker.
