Abstract: | The Language Clinic, a peer tutoring program in English language, has enjoyed considerable success in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Business. One of the keys to its success is its ability to provide educational services for students outside of the constraints of classroom schedules and faculty office hours. Students in these faculties can consult with peer tutor at any time during office hours as well as in the evening using an on-line consultation service. The student residences of the university provide an excellent opportunity for the expansion of this successful program in ways that not only increase convenience for students but also add to the overall academic culture of the resident halls. This project proposes to establish a Language Clinic service in the student residences which will serve student in the evening while they working on their assignments. The program will operate in different residences on a rotating basis and will draw upon students living in the halls for student-tutors, thus giving residents themselves a sense of responsibility and ownership. It will be evaluated through qualitative measures of clients' satisfaction as well as quantitative measures of their language improvement in the form of a 'mock IELTS' program. |
