| Abstract: | A simulation tool which analyzes long period fiber gratings (LPFG) of different kinds is developed, with the use of transfer matrices. The simulation tool plots the output spectrums (both magnitude and phase) once the input and the properties of the gratings such as length, coupling coefficient and pitch are specified. The phase characteristics of various LPFG (uniform, phase-shifted, length-apodized, index-apodized and chirped) are studied and summarized using the simulation tool. Some results of the simulation tool are tested using experiment, by fabricating LPFG using a CO2-Laser writing method. Some applications of the phase information of LPFG, such as using as sensors, are proposed theoretically. |
