Abstract: | An academic study based in Hong Kong investigated a Band 3 Secondary School and suggested a highly effective vocabulary learning strategy which implements a personalized curriculum. However, none of the popular spelling games available in the market matches with this criterion. In this project, 2 game modes have been built on the Unity platform. They are vocabulary expansion mode and personalized study mode. The former facilitates the users in learning new words while the latter enables the users to reinforce their memory with their chosen words. A natural way of generation of letters on the grid board with consideration of the letter frequency in English was implemented. The backtracking algorithm was added with a random element to generate the path to be searched. Several matching algorithms were compared with their searching time using a benchmark and their space complexity. An amended algorithm based on the Trie tree structure was designed. It achieved a very close searching time and also managed to occupy 4 times less memory space than the Trie. Overall, the project aims at offering a fascinated tool for learners with personalized word building experience and improving their study performance in a fun and relaxing way. |
