Learning experimental techniques in chemistry through making cosmetics

Abstract

This project aims to provide students with chemical experimental knowledge for the General Education course "The Science of Cosmetics" (GE2333). Because not every student taking this course has experience in performing scientific experiments and writing scientific reports, some students may encounter difficulty when attending the laboratory sections. In this project, interactive videos are proposed and will be developed to motivate students to learn experimental science and enhance students' experimental techniques. More specifically, the videos allow students to familiarize with the equipment, glassware, and experimental techniques before they perform the experiments during the laboratory sections of the course. The effectiveness of this teaching method will be evaluated using carefully designed experiments.
