Abstract: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is commonly used for post-stroke rehabilitation to re-establish normal muscle activation and motor control. In previous studies, FES has demonstrated considerable potential in restoring standing, walking, arm reaching, hand grasp and other functions of patients with spinal cord impairment. Recent studies provide evidence that synergy-based FES can significantly improve the rehabilitation performance by formulating FES patterns based on muscle synergy and utilizing multi-channel FES devices. In this project, we intend to build a portable multichannel EMG recording and muscle stimulating system to further facilitate researches in synergy-based functional electrical stimulation for post stroke rehabilitation. By elaborating system design, programming and hardware implementation, we managed to design a system that can be remotely controlled by a computer to carry out simultaneous EMG recording and FES.
